31st March 2011

Beautiful day on the Miramichi.  The water remains constant and there is a steady but lazy stream of ice cakes wandering along.  Reports from upriver is that Norrads Bridge is clear and I see that the ice hanging around the Porter Cove Bridge left yestrday.  Lots of deer along the shore, 21 on the Island this afternoon, a few have ventured too close to the open water and met their demise.  Definitely NOT motor boat water yet.

Doug Underhill has started his weekly report out of the Mighty Miramichi Media Officer, if you want to get a weekly email overview along with a few good boating and fishing tips sign up terry@mightymiramichi.com .

Checked with McCloskey's and the fishing licenses are not yet in although I see Brian has laid in a good stock of spirits in preparation.

PS:  Racoons are out in force thus begins  the annual wars.

30th March 2011

Fast approaching April so a little river condition report for those anxiously awaiting Spring Fishing.

This has been a unique winter in that there are sections of the Miramichi that never froze over, March nights have been cold and days not that warm subsquently we still have about 14 inchs of snow on the ground in fields and locations that the sun has been unable to reach.

Current River Conditions:
Some open stretches with channles through most other areas.  A lot of  ice remains in the river and along the north facing shoreline. The water level is "summer low" the bars and large rocks are exposed.

Conditions can change quickly pending weather conditions - at this time it's difficult to perdict what water conditions will be like at the start of the fishing season (April 15th).

23'd March 2011

River remains open at this location, never froze over this winter along this stretch although there remains pleanty of ice up river and down it is slowing melting out, water level remains low.  We have lots of deer around, one swam the river and joined his friends the other day.  Surprised to see how easy she was able to get out of the water onto the shore ice.  When they wander among the ice pack always concerned they will get caught between.

3'd March 2011

"Did the cat come back? Or has the Eastern cougar - despite hundreds of reported sightings in recent decades - been dead and gone for 83 years?  Less than a year after an Ontario government official declared his study verified that cougtars do exist in Ontario," the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Wednesday (March 2nd 2011) that they don't - not in Ontario or any other Canadian province or American state in the northeastern part of the continent."  (Eastern cougar declared extinct by Randy Boswell, Postmedia News, Daily Gleaner March 3'd 2011)
