18th November 2012

Deer season ended yesterday, it appears Steve and his group thoroughly enjoyed their adventure, I'd like to know what that one partridge actually cost :).

We have one more group coming in  before the end of November for a family reunion.

After 7 great years of what  started out as a sideline and turned into a full scale business Wendy & I have decided it was time to move on in our retirement.  Some very nice folks actively interested in salmon fishing and preservation  have purchased the cottage and we are looking forward to having them as neighbours.

Wendy and I want to thank all our clients, many who became friends that visited us year after year and we hope not to lose contact with.  For those wanting to start a small business on the Miramichi, our advice remains,  treat your clients right, provide good hospitality service with respect and you won't fail.

Thank you everyone.

Wendy & Shane

Scott with trout on in first snowfall 2012/13
High water, cold wind and very few salmon makes for a sad end to the 2012 fishing season with one day left.  Scott and Shaun have touched a fish or two but this is definitely the worst salmon season we have encountered for many years.  We had strong Spring fishing, no June Run at all, a little over two weeks in July and there it ended, the few being taken in this area had been in the river all summer.  Reports from ALL over seem too be consistent in that the salmon runs are way down, both Atlantic and Pacific.  Just speaking with fishermen returning from Gaspe, nothing, Matane, nothing, Cains basically nothing, Dungarvon count way down, Upper Reaches of the Miramichi nothing fresh.  Capilano, salmon but count way down.

11th October 2012

Cold windy day.  Water is up any fish out there are all over the river.  Reports yesterday of the odd dark fish being taken both down and upstream, nothing to write home about.  Also had reports of brights coming into the system, but again no sign in this area.

Smart, No Doe hunting on this side of the river

8th October 2012

More rain and water continues to rise.  Marty tied into a nice fish yesterday, never saw it but the fish ran straight out until he could see the spool metal through his backing and was gone.  Today he saw a number of fish jumping all about the same time, nothing for the rest of the day.  Lot's of water and very few fish.  Rumors of a fresh run coming in, hopefully they will be here before the end of the season.

Saturday, October 6, 2012

6th October 2012

MARTY picked up (3) salmon this afternoon, (2) by the cottage on  an Allie's Shrimp and (1) by the rock on his unnamed orange fly. All old river fish.  Strong wind making things difficult.

Thursday, October 4, 2012

4th October 2012

Water dropping off, but still lots of dark water for fish.  No one on the river but we are casually seeing one or two salmon a day.  Lets face it, at this time there is no Fall run and the fishing is awful. That's exactly what we are telling our clients.

Quiz:  If people down river are only taking the odd dark fish, and people up river the same, how in hell are people in the middle getting lots of BRIGHT fish with sea lice, something smells in that reporting.  Maybe they are coming back from Miramichi Bay in the Septic Truck when it goes there to unload.

Based on a cancellation we decided to give the cottage a complete top to bottom coat of paint, wouldn't you know it we had to turn down three calls for bookings. Sorry folks.

Our LAST year is winding down, fishing season all booked, couple weeks end of October still available, and some hunters in November.

2 October 2012

Well, now we have lots of nice dark water, if only we had some fish in it.  Very few showing.

Lots of moose taken, heard that the hunters are finding it difficult to find butchers. Good reason to put all the ducks in a row before starting the hunt.

30th September 2012

Rain, thank goodness, the rain continues, the water is coming up and we are seeing some (a little) fish movement.  Eric tied into a fish Friday in the slow water on a dry fly and Sheldon hit one today. Expect this rise in water will create a bit of movement, we only have two weeks left.

Appears from the back of pickup trucks, lot's of moose being "harvested", guess that's the new polite term, used to be, "we shot our moose."  "Harvest" makes it sound more like a good crop of pumpkins".

Friday, September 28, 2012

28th September 2012

Water is now the lowest it has been all year and we are not seeing much in the line of fish movement, in fact haven't seen anything for the past few days.  We do have a few days of rain scheduled,

Cancellation for Thanksgiving weekend, so we now have a vacancy Oct.1st through 11th. if anyone is interested.

25th September 2012

Most recent:

McKeil Brook:   Earl (1) salmon, (1) grilse,  Mike (1) salmon, Glen (0)
Our pool Pool:   Saw (0)

Reports:             Fresh fish are feeding in to the lower river.

Water:               Low and dropping.  Eric, you better bring some water with you if you want to use a boat this weekend. However the boat's there if not the water.

22nd September 2012

Fish:

Saw fish moving through the pool this morning.  Two salmon released just above us.  Reports of fish jumping Big Hole.  Believe these all to be summer fish moving up river, so all pretty dark.

21st September 2012

Little long  between posts,  but not much to report on.

We did have a couple of days of lite rain and the water is up a few inches.  The BIG news is that we saw our first salmon since July, actually (3) or the same one 3 times.  Reports of a grilse at Porcupine this morning and rumors of some new fish coming into the system way down river, but this is not the typical Fall.  This time of year we should be sitting on the porch trying to count to 10 between fish sightings, not so this year so far and only three weeks left.

A friend fishing out front got so mad he threw his glasses at the fish trying to entice them to see his fly, of course that meant diving in with snorkel and mask to find them after, that's how it went, right Earl.  He did find them, claims the water is definitely cool enough for the fish.

16th September 2012

Last night was one of the coolest we have had for a long while, we also had a bit of rain that brought the river up a few inches.  Had a couple of calls related to fishing, will give you what info I have to date.  Verified reports of (1) fish being taken Nelson Hollow,  (1) verified (2) unverified hooked just upriver from here, yesterday morning around 8am (1) verified salmon seen jumping above Porter Cove Bridge.

The water conditions even at this low level are fine for some fish movement and although I haven't seen any fish movement I believe that the odd fish is breaking away from the cold water pools and probably working up river.  The numbers just are not in the system at the moment to indicate a fresh run.

As for other game, lots of deer around, nice big buck hanging out around the cottage and one of our neighbourhood bears got shot yesterday, hoping it wasn't the big guy who has been entertaining us for past  couple of years.

14th September 2012

Have upgraded my browser and everything seems back on line - except my spelling.

What wonderful weather, true Fall, cool nights and great days.  The Humming Birds appear to have left, King Fishers are busy, a lot of Geese are winging South, not knowing that the season on them has been extended, the Blue Jays are busy but not running off with the acorns yet. Two Blue Herons on the shore.

Fishing, as far as I can determine is still "fiction" in this area although a few folks I know bringing sports in claim to see fish jumping.  Rocky Brook is good and that I believe but I have checked up and down river and locals tell me that the best they can come up with is a very weak fish soup from the last salmon that past their way.

Thank goodness our most recent and current visitors are not fishers.  The folks from Pennselvania seemed to have fallen in love with the area, can you imagine sitting on the deck watching the rain fall at 5am., 4 ladies coming in from Massachusetts this evening, looking forward to meeting them.  Can you  believe we finally broke into the US market this year and are selling!

Have a look at the current state of the river.  Still plenty of water to move fish if only they will start.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

12 September 2012

No, there is no sign of fish movement, here or down river.  You can sit on side of the river and admire the beautiful day, even the deer crossing without getting their feet wet, but no fish - as of yet.

FOR SALE SIGN went up on the cottage this afternoon and we have already had a few calls.

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

11th September 2012

Definitely into Fall,  cool nights warm days.  Water rose about 8” after the rain and is now dropping  just as fast.   No sign of fish movement.  Wendy & I gave it a try yesterday evening just to practice casting it’s been so long since we have seen a salmon.
Photo: As ya gear up for a safe & successful hunting season, don't be making the same mistake this fella made.. ;)

8th September 2012

AS for fishing, we have had some cool nights and the fish that have been holding in the cold water pools and are starting to break out, I just got a report of (1) salmon being taken just above us yesterday morning but to be honest if anything is going at the moment it must be during the night.  I fully expect to see some movement toward months end but fishing is fishing and you never know.  Have had reports of salmon stacked up in lower cold water pools and salmon waiting to come in, we didn’t have a June run so there is a good possibility that may come in late to add to the normal Fall run.  I’ll add that Doaktown Reports today fish with sea lice being taken in Blackville the fish from Big Hole Brook above Doaktown are moving out, holding in  deep water and jumping.

Sunday, September 2, 2012

2nd September 2012

Having trouble with this site - will duplicate on Moonshadow Facebook Site until resolved.

Water remains low and dropping but Fall is here and more cold nights like last night along with reports of plenty of fish in the Bay should see a decent Fall salmon run.  Clients canoeing above Priceville footbridge yesterday reported seeing (4) salmon moving at highspeed - we have seen no movement this pool for weeks.

Wildlife starting to move around, foxes, geese, deer, the odd moose and lots of ducks.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

15th August 2012

Sometimes one just has to diviate from the normal chatter.
Our clients may well remember the little blonde dog who greeted them at the door, or ran away with one of their shoes, or jumped in their truck, or sat on the wall and watched them land a salmon, or jumped in a boat ready to go fishing, or took the liberty of visiting them at the cottage, especially if the BBQ was on or another dog staying at the cottage.  Today we lost him and our heart is sad.  With that we say Rest in Peace Benny you were a very special friend and companion.

Monday, August 13, 2012

13th August 2012

Those two days of rain did nothing to improve the river conditions.

Monday, August 6, 2012

6th August 2012

Another hot day but with a nice wind.  Our guests reported seeing salmon in the pool yesterday but nothing showing this morning.  Same story down river to Quarryville - water is just too darn hot and very few fishermen on the river other than Outfitter Clients who paid good money and want a stab at the water.

Isn't it neat that no one is catching fish but each pool is still reporting a favourite "fly of the day" :)

Getting reports of a few dead salmon in the Beadle Brook area, but so far only a couple down here and that was a week or two back.

It looks like the cottage and water will be going up for sale at the end of this season so if anyone has an interest give us a yell, likewise if you know of anyone who may be interested we would appreciate it if you let them know.

Sunday, August 5, 2012

5th August 2012

CANCELLATION:

Due to the river closure we have had a cancellation, so if you are not interested in fishing and just want to enjoy the river or canoe/kayak/tube/swim, we now have 8,9,10,11 August open.

Added Conservation Measure

Anglers please note:
Added Conservation Measure:
Moncton – August 3, 2012 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) today announces that angling for all species on the Miramichi River system will be prohibited every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day, starting Sunday August 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. This closure is implemented in order to provide relief to the salmon during the current high water temperatures and low water levels that the system is experiencing. This restriction applies to all scheduled (salmon) waters in the Miramichi system including the Crown Reserves.

Pools and areas previously closed to angling (see notice to fish harvesters dated July 27, 2012) will remain closed for all species during the entire day

Saturday, July 28, 2012

28th July 2012

Hot with dropping water.  Still lots of water for fish and with the exception of a couple of days we are seeing one or two fish daily.  Clients making a few half hearted casts but nothing taking.  Fish in cold water pools but not stacking up and reports are the fish are moving around those pools.

Friend just got back from Larry's Gultch, they took (4) fish in 4 days, way below last years count for the same period.  One of those (4) was in the 30lb. range.

Water level is getting to the point that it is going to become hard canoeing/tubing without getting out on some of the bars.

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

25th July 2012

Well we had a downpour yesterday evening but too little.  No fish showing and DFO have closed the coldwater pools Mainsouthwest and parts of Cains.  If we don't get some moisture we can expect to see parts of the river closed to fishing.  Bring cards a steak and extra beer.  I have only seen a couple of dead salmon in the past week but currently watching the eagles picking up chub and red fins.  A seagull was going through a lot of antics this evening trying to eat a fish that was too large.

Monday, July 23, 2012

23'd July 2012

Thunder in the distance but no rain and the bottom is dropping out of the river.  As for fishing news, Lika hooked a salmon yesterday morning on a bomber, Alden picked a grilse up the day before and our current clients report seeing fins on the surface this morning and nothing since.  Check with Curtis Tackle and some locals no fishing that area.  We continue to daily see the odd fish working through but can safely report at this time the fishing is next to non-existence - should increase the beer sales.

Thursday, July 19, 2012

19th July 2012

Conditions are good, rain overnight and showers throughout the day, water temperature has dropped.  We are seeing a few fish move but they are not taking, did see a large dead salmon drifting the wrong way.

Gotta be a fish at the end of this rainbow

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

18th July 2012

Nice overnight rain brought the water up a few inches.  The guys gave it a whirl with no success this morning, water temperature 22C.
Rumors of a grilse run making it's way upstream, add to that  Report from Procupine of  some success this morning.   From just above of a couple of fish rising to the fly this morning but not taking.

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

17th July 2012

A badly needed downpour
Even with all the dry weather fish are moving, although few and far between and not taking well.

Saturday, July 14, 2012

14th July 2012

Wow, another hot day giving the pool a break.  Fish taken this morning above and below and moving in the pool but just too hot to stand out there.

CUTBACKS - DFO counting fish

Friday, July 13, 2012

13th July 2012

Hot, hot day - too hot to be on the water.  We had fish pooled up until about 11am when they all headed up river - don't usually hold here during the summer, they do this in the Fall Run, where they come in overnight, hold up until 10-11am and all move out at once.

Unless wwe get a break in the weather I would expect a slow down in the fishing, maybe the odd one during the morning.  Again please save a salmon, snap them off quickly.  And if you do keep a grilse remember it's (1) and off the river not (3) and up the hill after each one.

Thursday, July 12, 2012

12 July 2012

Aaron picked up this grilse around 8am.
We saw small runs moving through

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

11th July 2012

Warm day water continues to drop.  The guys tied into (3) this morning, did the right thing snapping them off.  A $2 fly or salmon's life, not a hard decision to make and I hope as the water warms that all fishermebn do likewise.

Aaron landed a nice grilse shortly after arriving this afternoon and it to is now swimming happily upstream.  Lika hooked another just before dark, this one made the decision easy and took off on it's own :)

We will see what tomorrow brings.

10th July 2012

Not plentiful but still a few around.
9am ....... Jeff picked grilse up,
9:15am..  Ron picked grilse up,
7pm.......  I picked up a nice grilse on shady lady.

Checking with a friend Blissfield area, he has picked up (4) striped bass 11-12" in past week.
9am
9:15am

Monday, July 9, 2012

9th July 2012

Water continues to drop, high West wind most of the day.
Fishing has dropped off,  may have seen (4) fish all day and our fishermen touched a few, nothing landed. Check down river finds the conditions slow.

Sunday, July 8, 2012

8th July 2012

Today was a dead loss for fishing, saw scattered fish but had a heavy West wind that wiped out the day.

Note:  I did get a response from the fisherman who caught the striped bass yesterday evening.

"I was the angler.  It was definitely a striped bass (~11-12“).  It was surprise!  It is the first time, to my knowledge, that one was caught that far up.  I assure you the fish ID is correct.  I have been working on striped bass in the SJ River for a number of years. "

Mark Gautreau

Department of Biology, University of New Brunswick

I think it's safe to confirm that's the first bass that I know of being taken this far up river.  Anyone that can add to this feel free to speak up :)  Congratulations Mark and thanks for permission to add the picture.

PS:  Saw an Osprey knock it's self silly, dove in about 4 inches of water. Took awhile to recover but eventually came back around and claimed his fish.

Saturday, July 7, 2012

7th July 2012

A very hot day.

The guys tied into 3 fish early morning then things went quiet.  Watched a few fish go through during the day and a small run around 8pm.  Day count for this area was (8) of which the majority were salmon.

Of note:  Couple of fishermen working the South side of the pool, landed what they claimed to be a "striped bass,"  if so, that will be the first one I know of this far up river.

Friday, July 6, 2012

6th July 2012

Fishing this area dropped off this morning.

Leigh picked up a grilse and the rest of the boys tied into some salmon.  I picked up a nice 37 1/4" salmon around noon, took me down river further than I've been for a few years.  Fish are all over the river at the moment, seem to be running individually not concentrated schools as in the past few days.

Doaktown/Blissfield reporting decent fishing.
Some folks stopped in from Dungarvon, reporting good fishing.

Thursday, July 5, 2012

5th July 2012

Down river reports of good fishing, shady lady, black bears, anything black & green.

9 am report:  We had  heavy rain overnight but water stable at this point.

Luke's salmon
Luke's 2nd (30" twin)
Leigh (1) salmon, Ed (2) salmon. Luke (2) salmon (2) grilse

I picked up (2) salmon, one a nice 15 lb +/- and (1) grilse.
Leight & salmon

Ed wants this one on line

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

4th July 2012

Decent fishing the boys tied into (7 or 8) this morning, mostly 8-10# salmon with a few grilse mixed in.

I picked up (4) salmon, lost (1) grilse and (1) salmon on green machine/white butt.

New group in this afternoon so we will see how they make out :)
                  So far:  Todd (1) grilse
Leigh lost a salmon, took his favourite fly.

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

3'd July 2012

Turning into a hot day, water is dropping nicely.  Allan hit the water around 8am and had released two fish before 8:30 am, he tied into 3 more before taking a breather.

Corey was able to catch a nice Hardy Saint John reel and rod from 4 or 5 feet of water, he did mention the rod was just a cheap one (Coleman's).

Monday, July 2, 2012

2nd July 2012

Things started off slow but water is clearing, Danny picked up a salmon and Allan landed a nice grilse on a green machine/black hackle this evening.

Sunday, July 1, 2012

1st July 2010

Happy  Canada Day
Overnight thunderstorm kept the water high and riled but we are seeing fish, especially along the shore. The water dropped trhis afternoon and the boys picked up a 9-10# salmon around 8PM.   Salmon & grilse landed.  If we can get a few clear days fishing should inprove.

Friday, June 29, 2012

29th June 2012

Water high but dropping, strong West wind all day.  Finally some fish are moving in, hugging the shore line.

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

27th June 2012

Two straight days of rain with more on the way.  River is high.  Our fishermen haven't even ventured on the water.

Monday, June 25, 2012

25th June 2012

Rains have brought the river to a nice level and temperature, more rain perdicted.  We have had rods on the river for the past 3 days with no fish.  I do have confirmation of a 10# salmon being taken at Salmon Brook, so at least one got by.  Counting stations are reporting low numbers, only a fraction of last years count.

Thursday, June 21, 2012

21st June 2012

Rods on the water for past couple of days, not a sign of a salmon.  Down river reports are the same with the exception of the "dream catchers".  High day time temperatures are driving the water temp up and seeing the water level drop.  One would be hard pressed to run a canoe through the rapids at this point without getting out and walking.

Calling for rain through this weekend, looking forward to it.  if you are going fishing take a cold pack and deck of cards.

Sunday, June 17, 2012

17th June 2012

Water continues to drop.  Very low for this time of year,  no sign of the salmon run and with this heat they may hold up in the cold water pools waiting for a rise in the river.

I have only heard of one verified salmon up this way and it was taken at salmon brook.  Most recent guests put a nice effort in but only came up with a few trout.

Lots of kayak's on the river, grad students enjoying nature.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

13th June 2012

Water is low and continues to drop.

Although I keep hearing of the odd salmon being caught, everything seems to be hearsay and at this point unconfirmed.  We have had people on the river for short periods of time for past few days, picked up some small trout but not seen a trace of a salmon.

Friday, June 8, 2012

7th June 2012

Guess I got a bit ahead of myself.  We still have sea run trout moving through.  Reports from Doaktown and upriver of seeing good trout fishing in fits and spurts.  You just have to be at the right place at the right time.  Even with the cool weather and rain the river is dropping fast.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

6th June 2012

Well it's confirmed, the "sea trout" got by, they are now residing in Juniper by the hundreds, those few we were picking up were stragglers.  The brights are getting nearer by the day and the odd one is already by.

Sunday, June 3, 2012

3'd June 2012

Blustery windy day from the East - not a fishermans envy.

Our cottage visitors tried a bit of fishing yesterday with no luck and slept through a Black Bear showing off across from the cottage.  Wendy and I greatly appreciated the lobster they brought us and the raccoons tried desperately to get into the lobster remnants overnight.

I was out for an hour yesterday evening after seeing a large fish jump, either a very large trout or a grilse and my upstream neighbour reports seeing a large fish roll.  All I picked up was a few 10-13 inch river trout.  There are not a lot of fish showing at the moment but I'm sure the odd one is sneaking through.

Some of our clients who have heard that the cottage may be going on the market at the end of this season have contacted us lementing the loss or trying to book into 2013.
It's sure nice to have loyal clintale but we have to move on and be able to get away and enjoy our short NB summers during our retirement.

Thursday, May 31, 2012

31st May 2012

Light rain on/off for past few days has brought the river up ever so slightly.  Tried the waters out with no sign of decent size trout or salmon at the moment, but this is the last day of May and June usually starts the main bright run.

The August long weekend cancellation has now been taken.
We still have a few days open in August.

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

23'd May 2012

Gave the trout another try this afternoon - hard fishing, too cold for hatch so they were very slow to rise to a dry fly, plus a constant East wind just to make things miserable.

Did land a decent mix of River and Sea Trout, lost the Grandaddy of course.  The only thing I could get their attention with was the White/green Bomber.

Lika just came in with his largest being 19 inch on the same fly.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

22nd May 2012

OK, here we go - tied into the first of the sea run trout this afternoon, landed about (10) kept (4), they were taking white millers out of the air and on occassion off the water.  I found the best working fly was a white/green bomber fished dry but there was so much feed in/on/over the water that they were being very choosy.

For those lesser fishermen interested in bright salmon, we have had our first early run (Rocky Brook)bright arrive also, so don't be surprised if you tie into a salmon while fishing trout, that's what usually happens to me :)

Note: We have had a cancellation for the New Brunswick Day long weekend in August if anyone is interested.  (August  2 - 9th).

Monday, May 21, 2012

21st MAY 2012

Great weekend, lots of  kayaks and canoes on the river.

Reports that the Gasperau Run has gone through, probably to Miramichi Lake by now.

Our weekend guests picked up some river trout along the shore but no sign of sea run or brights at the moment. Any day now expect to start hearing reports. My first reports on large trout always seem to come in from up river, which means that the big ones get by without drawing too much attention,

Don't remember if I mentioned previously but we do have our  bear back and he brought a moose friend with him this year..

Giving some serious thought toward selling off the cottage and river frontage at the end of this season. So if you hear of any serious queries for a cottage on the Miramichi we'd appreciate it if you sent them our way :)

Monday, May 14, 2012

14th May 2012

About time I drafted a bit of an update:

Water is falling to a good June level, further heavy rain notwithstanding.

We really are in that "in between stage" waiting for the first sign of seatrout and brights.

I tested the water this evening, there are some good size river trout around but not taking well. They come up once for a fly and if you don't get the hook set, they won't rise again until you throw something different at them.

Wen and I are giving some serious thought toward  selling off the cottage at the end of this season.  So if you hear of any serious queries for a cottage on the Miramichi we'd appreaciate it if you sent them our way :)

Thursday, May 3, 2012

3'd May 2012

Steve Fredricks tells me that this fly works so well in the Blissfield area that he has to keep it hidden in one of those blue Crown Royal bags until he is ready to fish.  Mind you the bag serves a dual purpose when he's on the river :)

un-named

Out this evening for a few minutes, saw several salmon breaking the surface, but not taking.  Did have a few good tugs from river trout.  Yesterday evening the salmon were rising to a small fly fly. Nights have been too cold, no hatch on the water

Thursday, April 26, 2012

26th April 2012

I'm told that the printed angling regulations are now available.

Water continues to drop and is clearing.  Reports of fish being taken along the shoreline in this area.  If we don't get anothr rise in water there should be some fish around this weekend.

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

24th April 2012

Rain over Sunday/Monday has taken the river into flood conditions.  Lots of  trees and old shore ice among very dirty water, so the fishing has come to a halt for a few days.  I would hazard a guess that excluding any more rain water levels should be back down by Friday or Saturday.

Friday, April 20, 2012

20th April 2012

Still many a fish to be found.  Local guides claim that this morning was exceptional\.  I went out at 2PM for and hour had tied into (5), ( 3) of them good size (34-36")  salmon, saw several others taken in this pool by sports. (Blue Smelt).

19th April 2012

Turned into a decent day, all three took fish all day long fishing from the shore.  Total by 5PM  7 landed, 5 or 6 hooked & lost and a number of short strikes.

18th April 2012

Cold night, water temperature dropped, water was up and a bit dirty so - slow fishing, bit of a wind which made it cold on the water.  Evening, beautiful, water temperature came up and fish showing, boat in front of the cottage took 5 in 1/2 hour, largest 32" salmon.  Lot's of fish showing behind McCarty Island, not taking well.  Fly of choice "Black Ghost".

17th April 2012

Water may be up a wee bit.  Fishing in this area has dropped off somewhat, still a few being taken.  Morning produced better, saw several boats taking fish by the cottage  Went out for about an hour this evening, struck three and Wendy landed one.  Checked with passing boats, same story.  Typical spring fishing.

16th April 2012

Slowed a bit, but still out there.  This group wasn't much of a threat :)

15th April 2012

Great day and a nice way to start the season. Lot's of fish.
You literally cannot throw a fly in the water in this area without coming up with a fish.
Reports from Blissfield of "strong fishing" lots of big fish.

13th April 2012

Two days to the official opening.  We are seeing some fish but the water is low and there is a fair amount of weak ice along the river banks.  We can put boats in but the water is very low and clear .  Unless you are running a jet motor it is going to be difficult to navigate the rapids. Canoes and small motors will probably be best suited.

Picked up fishing licenses, no regulations available, which seems to have turned into the normal DNR practice. DFO states that the rules & regulations imposed last year will continue this season in terms of salmon.

29th March 2012

This shows how much the river has dropped in the past few days.  Waders may be vogue for spring fishing.  My neighbour reports lots of salmon rolling and jumping in the slow water pool.

28th May 2012

Starting to get the cottage ready for another busy year.  New batteries in the smoke & CO alarms, turn on the water, shock the well etc.  Summer is booking quickly, we have had a number of calls for dates already taken so don't leave your booking until the last minute.

I see every weekend in June, all July and the first two weeks of August already taken.  We still have dates in May, a few week days in June and the last part of August still open. Check our calendar out for availability.

Picked up my Guides License today, that went from $10 to $25.  Rangers thought the government may be holding the line on fishing licenses as they increased last year.  In 2013 we may be able to purchase our licenses through Service NB, which makes more sense.  In a number of US States you can purchase fishing licenses over internet or phone and receive confirmation number to use, much like the way we currently can register our  vehicles.

23'd March 2012

Looks like all the ice has moved out of the Main Southwest Miramichi with the exception of that piled on the banks which is quickly melting.  It was a heavier run than we have experienced in recent years but quickly passed through.  With little snow accumulation, early ice run, we can expect a dry summer & low water unless rains make up the difference.

22nd March 2012

Heavy run, took the neighbours deck off his house. Highest the ice has come for a number of years in this area. Knocked down a bird house at the cottage but other than cleanup no damage.

19th March 2012

Just woke up and moving into another season, most of the white stuff has gone and it's starting to feel like Spring.  We have a helicopter based across the river, buzzing around dragging an antenna array, looking for all that good stuff that will pave our streets in gold :)

Snow is melting fast, river is low with lots of glades opening. I doubt that the ice will hold until April 15th with the current melt rate.  Time to start looking at the equipment, rods, lines, boats, motors and fresh gas.
