An update:

1. You may notice the report from 5th December has been deleted, too many people thought the "hot tub" was with our cottage - sorry, no hot tub.

2. We have added a calander to our website to help with bookings and clients confirming.

3. Some new pictures on the website.

4. Clients returning will note some new renovations.

5. Bookings are begining to flow in, so if you are interested please don't leave it until the last minute or your dates may be gone.

River & snow report: At the moment we have had a slight setback with two back to back snow storms but it will melt off quickly. The river is still in solid with a few glades showing, the ice has weakened and a couple of weeks of sun should provide a better idea when Spring Salmon season will actually start. The cost of a Guides License went up within the last week and I imagine the Salmon Licenses will follow suit. Soon every salmon you catch will have an "invoice attached."

Into the new year. We closed down after New Year with intetion of opening just after the river ice runs - normally around April 15th +/- when fishing season opens. Winter seems to be stiring the blood a bit as we had three bookings in the last two days so I suggest anyone who is interested start inquiring. Everyone booking so far has been returning guests so we must be doing something right.

Wendy & I will be away for the month of February and although family will be staying at our residence we will be checking in and taking bookings via e-mail at wclow@nbnet.nb.ca.

Snow on the ground and still coming down at noon.  Our last group of hunters left this morning, they had seen a number of deer including some bucks and knew of a number of bucks taken in the area, they also saw a very large moose, quite content and booked again for 2009.  Being men they mistook the swifter sheets for coffee filters but stated the coffee turned out exceptional.

 

The cottage was left very clean and tidy, thanks Paul A, we much appreciated it.

 

We are now closed for the winter season and have already started the bathroom renovations and will be in full swing come spring.  We will be keeping our rates the same in 2009.

 

Our bookings were up from previous years in 2008 and we had a great group of clients, looking forward to seeing you again in 2009 and invite them to drop in for a coffee is passing our way.

We currently have our last hunting group in until the end of the season.  They watched a buck swim the river and come up in the field below our cottage this morning.  They have also seen deer along the road close to the cottage which was verified by the  fresh overnight deer tracks, also fresh tracks indicate our resident moose remains in the area.  As I mentioned previously the spike horn has been taken.

 

I saw a salmon jump close to the shore this afternoon.  The blue jays and Canada jays (Moose Birds, Gorbeys) are busy storing for the winter.

 

We have had a lot of queries for late December early January but had made up our minds to close for renovations at the end of hunting season.  Installing a new shower stall and doing some painting with expectations of opening again in March.  2009 is already booking up with a good portion of hunting season taken, so if you want to confirm dates we recommend you do it soon.

8th November 2008

Well our first group in got to watch a moose cross the river below the cottage and a moose and calf on the opposite shore.  The group currently in walked out on the deck their first night, a doe and spike horn were standing on the lawn in front of the cottage, nice safe haven for them as long as they stay in close to the cottage.  The current group of hunters informed me they just use the word “hunting” as an excuse to get together and would have to think seriously before actually shooting a deer J  They are a little disappointed that the heavy rain yesterday cleaned the mud off their shiny new trucks and now even the trucks don’t look like they were used for hunting L

 

Due to a cancellation, we currently have an opening for Nov. 10^th-15^th inclusive.

Cold nights and bright days. The leaves are falling, the boats are put
away, some hunters out looking for partridge and a little game movement.
Not as many deer out and around as we experienced last year. We have a
group coming in for a family reunion on Friday to, then groups of hunters
arrive for the next three weeks. We do have openings toward the end of
November and into December.

Our OFF SEASON RATE ($90 per night) kicks in 1st November 2008. A nice time
of year to cozy up to a wood fire and simply relax.

Last week we were given the option to be classified under the new provincial
regulations or stay with Canada Select. Canada select has the stricter
requirements so we opted to stay with the Canada Select receiving 3 star
classification and have been included by the Province as an NB approved
tourism cottage. Moonshadow Cottage now will be included in NB Tourism
Marketing and can be found by following the NEW Scenic Drive Signage along
Rte. 8, the jumping salmon on a purple back ground designated as the
"Miramichi River Route." WE have permission to use the NB Tourism logos
etc., now it would be nice if we could get high-speed internet access and be
able to download the files :(

Don't forget we will make up Gift Certificates on request.

Well with a tear in our eye we say goodbye to the most successful Fishing Season in recent memory for the Miramichi.  Fish continue to show as they work up river but the water is up and dark so mostly just broaching.  On Monday a salmon was hooked in the pool, our most recent guests closing out the season focused on the Cains River, Kevin S., hooking one and releasing another he reported excellent fishing on the Cains the previous week.

 

It is to be noted that the Moose harvest continues strong, one truck with (2) bulls and another with (1) bull – frustrating.

 

We have several hunter groups returning in the next few weeks for deer season and look forward to seeing them again. 

 

November 1^st our rates drop to $90 per night “off season” and we still have some days open toward the end of November.

The fishing has slowed down.  If you watch the river you will still see the odd salmon jumping or broaching as it makes it’s way upstream.  Water is a good height but very dark.  We hit the river for a few minutes yesterday evening to no avail,  a check down river finds the same story, seeing the odd fish but not taking well if at all.

 

Checked out Porter Brook Falls yesterday afternoon, saw a large salmon and couple of grilse trying to make it over, very dark fish.

 

We now have 2 bear just down the road from us and another in the immediate vicinity staying west, (4) raccoons lots of blue jays and a chipmunk or two.  The bear are very skittish but love fall apple trees. Haven’t seen many deer or moose in comparison to last fall, although some signs where they have been traveling at night.

We had heavy rain yesterday (Thursday).  The river rose approx. 2 feet on top of what we already had.  This will put a crimp on any fishing for a few days although they will move in closer to the shoreline.
